Pineapple

I Love, Love, Love Pineapple! Pineapples are 5 x more effective that cough medicine!

This fruit has serious attitude, spiky on the outside, sweet on the inside and to top it off it wears a crown!

Ever eaten too much pineapple and had a sore tongue? Bromelain breaks down proteins in meat & flesh – tenderising meat, including our mouths, and whilst it is great for cleaning the tongue and other soft tissues of the mouth, too much can leave your mouth feeling a bit raw.

My daughters (and my dental nurses) will tell you that my advice for a cough, a sore throat or to freshen and keep tongue clean is Pineapple, daily Probiotics are a constant (it is all about the gut health always!) and Coconut Oil for almost every ailment (see Coconut Oil info) added with a bit of Vicks Vapour rub for good measure (ball of feet for chesty coughs, foreheads for headaches and on cotton wool for earache) and they have some daily supplements that I helicopter parent over, & that  is basically my Medicine Cabinet!

The pineapple is a tropical plant with an edible fruit. I was lucky, when on a Dentaid charity trip to Uganda in 2016 our Ugandan driver Stevie took us to his pineapple plantation, we were given a tour and served straight from the plant! (Baby pineapples are ridiculously cute!).

Little fact about pineapple:

Did you know that there is a group of enzymes in pineapple called Bromelain? Bromelain breaks down proteins dissolving mucous in the lungs, it has anti-inflammatory purposes and fights respiratory problems!

Trivia

Pineapples regenerate. you can plant pineapple leaves to grow a new plant. In the wild pineapple plants can live up to 50 years!  Almost every part of a pineapple can be used – including for vinegar and alcohol production. It was Christopher Columbus that brought the fruit to Europe, Pineapple was so named because of its striking resemblance to pine-cones. The hummingbird (one of my favs, after the fabled Phoenix) is hugely responsible for the pollination of pineapples.

In local news my favourite flavour from The Alpine Drinks Man was Pineappleade! (don’t think there was any bromelain in that!).
