Our Ohh! Dental Dog
Bayley our 4 legged diva, loves having her teeth brushed. Bayley loves LIVER flavoured toothpaste (yuk) & sometimes CHICKEN flavoured (hmmm no still yuk chicken flavoured toothpaste is bleurgh!).
Dogs cannot have human toothpaste as it is very harmful for them and would make them very poorly.
BUT dogs should get their teeth brushed just like us. They need special dog toothbrushes and dog toothpaste.
Bayley always has lovely white healthy teeth and nice fresh breath (well OK…. sometimes liver and chicken smelling straight after toothbrushing).
If you have a dog that does not like having their teeth brushed then you could try dental chews and/or chew toys. Just be careful not to give too many dental chews one every one or two days would be enough.
Bayley’s teeth have a lot of work to do as dogs use their mouths for more than just eating,
they use them to play, explore and taste a lot of their surroundings too.
To begin toothbrush training choose a time when your dog is comfortable and relaxed, take it slowly and keep it short. Stop whilst your dog is still happy.
Introduce the special dog toothpaste first on your finger and get your dog to lick it off, after your dog has shown that they enjoy the toothpaste, start to run your finger along the inside of their mouth following the gum line.
After a few days of introducing finger brushing your dog is ready to start tooth brushing, Start gently with the front teeth first using gentle round motions stop often to let them taste and lick the toothbrush as a reward. After a couple of weeks you should be able to do all the teeth.
